BCN Marathon Challenge approaches

BCN Marathon Challenge 2012
May 2012

If I had a pound for every person who tells me they really want to take part in the BCN Marathon Challenge I would be a rich man! The problem that all this enthusing doesn't seem to translate into boat entries. Last year there were about 35 and to date I understand that there are just over 20 registered.

Tawny Owl - one of the contenders and a team to beat...

The problem seems to be NIMB' ism - I like the idea but -Not In My Boat...

People are clearly a bit nervous about committing their floating pride and joy to the perceived horrors of the BCN backwaters, which is a huge shame because the network has masses to offer and following extensive dredging and clearance work by BW / WRG and BCNS the channel will be as clear as it has been for many years.

Now, if you have been humming and haring about entering this splendid event, there is now an added bonus lined up for the finishers in Walsall Town Wharf. Truman Enterprises have put on a musical line up in the Wharf Tavern for the evening featuring Folk, Blues and Rock - something for everyone. The competitors may be a bit bleary eyed by the time the last bars are struck at 11.00pm, so if you cant actually participate how about coming down and joining the revelries for the evening of Sunday 3rd June?

COME AND SEE THE BOATS AT THE WHARF

So, a top top tip for 2012 - enter the BCN Marathon Challenge on the weekend of the Queens Jubilee, but failing that come and revel in the after event party - all in aid of a very worth local canal based charity.

See you there.

  1. I can't wait to see more of the BCN... but I don't think I'm up to the Challenge... yet.

  3. I wish we could be in two places at once! The Challenge is a great event and was even better for having crew on board last year.

    Who will beat nb Muskrat?

Good luck with the plotting - not long to go now!

  4. I would love to do it, but the timing of the event simply doesn't work for us - even when I currently have one of the boats on the BCN.

Its not in any way about not wanting to use my boat - all about the time of the year it is held - the same thing that currently stops us doing lots of boating events we would like to.
